Energy Spy Tools, TED Saves Power

by Don Ames

Well, I finally found out what TED stands for -  The Energy Detective.

TED is an electronic instrument that has a sender unit and a receiver unit. The sender unit goes inside your electric curcuit panel and the reciever unit sets anywhere in your home. By attaching the sender unit to your homes electrical wiring, the device can transmit electric usage to the receiver unit. What you get, is an accurate reading on how much juice your using right now. The TED people have it right when they say, “If you can measure it, you can learn how to save it.” ( or something like that)

The sender unit, that fits inside the electrical panel, has five wires attached to it that are then attached to connections in the panel. The connections can be made by yourself, unless your hair really stands on end around high voltage,  then I would simply challenge your not-so-nice neighbor to give it a try.

Think of TED as your homes speedometer. TED will tell you just how fast your home is using power right that second. You might be interested in knowing that the two porch lights you leave on all night is costing you 2 cents per hour. The cake in the oven, well a lot more than two cents!

With TED, you can program in your electric costs per kilowatt hour and TED will make the conversion into dollars and cents for you. No more surprises when the power bill arrives, you will already know the damage to your pocket book. TED has a web connection that allows you to produce really neat graphs, charts, and trend indicators right on your home computer. To further the advantages of TED, the google smart meter program works with TED and provides additional information. Check with your State tax credit people and don’t be surprised if TED qualifies for a cost cutting tax credit.

TED is available on both ebay and amazon but watch carefully which model your getting. Prices range from $120 to $300. How much you use the information TED provides will determine your pay-back period.
