Power Chuckle – Change a Light Bulb and Save Energy
Change a Light Bulb and Save Energy
Don Ames
How many utility bills does it take to change a light bulb? I guess there are no great answers to this variation on the old riddle. At least I didn’t mention a lawyer or a minister. To most of us, it’s time to change a light bulb when it’s burned out. In this day and age, with rising power bills and rising residential energy needs ( a second big screen T.V. ) our power bills are nearly out of control. If there is a compact fluorescent bulb that will consume less energy and help control the power bill, then I am going to make the switch ( even before the old bulb flickers into darkness).
Perhaps the old riddle should read, “How many light bulbs does it take to change a power bill?” The power bill bottom line is just one bulb.
I have asked homeowners the question, “how many light bulbs do you have in your house?” The first number they come up with is always less than the actual number of light bulbs. When they stop, walk around the house and actually count the number of bulbs ( back porch, closet, night light, recessed lights ) the total number is always, an surprisingly large number. When you think you have about 15 light bulbs in your house and the actual number is 34 – and then you calculate the energy difference between 34 incandescent bulbs and 34 compact fluorescent bulbs, you begin to see the possibility of real energy savings.
